How we work and how we test

Automated checkers catch part of the problem. A person listening to the document with a screen reader catches the rest. Every file we return has had both.

The process

  1. You send the documents

    Attach the files or send links to the pages where they are posted. If you do not know where to start, we can suggest the documents people use most.

  2. We review and quote

    We look at page counts, tables, forms and scans, and send a fixed quote with a delivery date within one business day. Nothing starts until you approve it.

  3. We fix each document

    Tags and structure, heading levels, reading order, lists, table headers, alt text, form field labels, links, bookmarks, document title and language. We do not change your wording or layout.

  4. We test each document

    An automated check with PAC, then a person reads the document from start to finish with NVDA. Anything that fails goes back for another pass.

  5. You receive files and a report

    The fixed files come back with a short report. You replace the old files on your site.

The testing standard

Every document is remediated to WCAG 2.1 AA, the standard named in the ADA Title II web rule, and tested two ways.

PAC (PDF Accessibility Checker)

A free checker that tests a PDF against PDF/UA and the machine-checkable parts of WCAG. It finds missing tags, untagged content, missing alt text, missing table headers, missing title and language, and structure errors.

PAC cannot tell if alt text is accurate, if headings make sense, or if the reading order matches the page. That is what the second test is for.

A person reading with NVDA

NVDA is a free screen reader used by blind and low-vision people on Windows. A person reads each document from start to finish with it and checks that:

  • The reading order matches the page
  • Headings describe their sections
  • Table values are announced with their headers
  • Alt text describes what the image shows
  • Every form field is announced with its label

What you receive

  • The fixed filesWith clean file names, ready to replace the versions on your site.
  • A short reportFor each file: what was wrong and what we changed.

Turnaround

You get a quote within one business day of sending the documents. Turnaround depends on page count and on how many tables, forms and scanned pages the documents contain. We give you the delivery date in the quote.

If you have a meeting date or a publication deadline, tell us when you send the files and we will say whether we can meet it before you approve the quote.
